Hungary hosted the 2007 World Coarse Fishing Championships at Lake Velence – halfway between Lake Balaton and Budapest. Even though not as popular as France it still remains one of the leading coarse fishing destinations in Europe. Lakes vary in size from the huge Lake Balaton – almost 50 miles long x 8 miles across to small unfished waters.
Fly fishing can be enjoyed on rivers near the Slovakian border in northern Hungary.
Unfortunately, most fish caught by the Hungarians ends up on the dining table but the Hungarian Fishing authorities and private lake owners do re stock waters on a regular basis.
The most popular fish caught include Carp, Cat fish, Zander (Pike/Perch),Bream and Pike.
Carp over 60lb and Cat fish over 100lb have been caught.
Because many Hungarians fish on a regular basis tackle, permits and bait shops can be found in most towns and villages.
Please enquire about where you can fish and rules regarding fishing permits.
